Not really, a social conservative should easily win a state like Alabama. However, if one professes to be a social conservative their personal life must be beyond reproach. Values voters take those values seriously and expecting them to put those values aside simply to win an election is foolhardy.  :shrug:

Character matters much more than political party to the social conservative IMO. I don't know whether the allegations were true but what is true was that the Judge was ineffective in countering those allegations in enough socially conservative voters minds to win in a state Trump won with 74% of the vote just a year ago.....

Spot on.  This is also why Trump will probably not be touched by whatever accusations are aimed at him.  He's never made any pretense of being a moral man and nothing about his "authenticity" takes much of a hit even if he gets a bit of mud on him.  He'd judged differently in this regard and the social conservatives who held their nose and voted for him despite his flaws won't be any more inclined to change their opinion on him should what they suspect be confirmed.
