China's Xi fetes Trump on first day of Beijing trip

BEIJING (Reuters) - With lavish pageantry and an uncharacteristic personal flourish, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday rolled out a red carpet welcome for U.S President Donald Trump at the Forbidden City, the ancient home of China’s emperors.

While North Korea and trade are set to dominate the formal part of the visit, which ends on Friday, China has been keen to show the importance it puts on Trump’s visit, the first by a foreign leader since the end of a key Communist Party congress last month where Xi cemented his power.

Donald Trump First American President To Dine in Forbidden City

In the clearest sign yet that Donald Trump is commanding the greater respect from world leaders, the Chinese government rolled out the red-carpet for him bestowing on him an honor not granted to any US President in the history of the People’s Republic of China: official dinner inside the Forbidden City, the historic palace that housed Chinese emperors and their families for almost 500 years.

Chinese President Xi Jinping went even further then just the private dinner, he shut-down the entire city for Trump, so he and Melania could have a private tour. Trump is expected to dine with Xi inside the Jianfu Palace, which dates back to the eighteenth century and was fully restored in 2005, making it one of the most well-preserved parts of the palace complex.

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping entered a large room in the Great Hall of the People at 12:05 pm local time for a signing ceremony with businesss executives. Trumo and Xi sat in front a large blue sign that said, “US-China Business Exchange.”
With Xi looking on, Trump raised concerns about the US-China trade relationship, and he urged Xi to do more on North Korea.

—on US/China trade relationship: “Right now unfortunately, it is a very unfair and one-sided one.”
 “But I don’t blame China, after all, who can blame a country for taking advantage of another country for the benefit of is citizens.”
 “I give China great credit,” he added. Instead, Trump blamed past US administrations for allowing the trade imbalance to persist.
 The US/China trade relationship “just doesn’t work” and “is just not sustainable.”
 —Trump said he and Xi are “very much in the same place” on “security coooeration
—on North Korea, Trump said, “China can fix this problem easily and quickly.”
He called on Xi to “work on it very hard.”
 “I know one thing about your president. If he works on it hard, it’ll get done.”
 “Time is quickly running out and we have to act fast.”
Xi, in his remarks, said it’s “natural” for the US and China to sometimes disagree. But he said they must work together to find mutual agreement on key issues.
