The Texas church massacre is providing a familiar frustration for law enforcement: FBI agents are unable to unlock the gunman's encrypted cellphone to learn what evidence it might hold, The Associated Press reported.

But while heart-wrenching details of the rampage that left 26 people dead might revive the debate over the balance of digital privacy rights and national security, it's not likely to prompt change anytime soon.

The FBI hasn't actually said what -make- of phone the church killer owned.

It might be an iPhone -- but might not be.
Could be a Samsung.
They haven't said.

Actually, I find the fact that the FBI can't break into it reassuring.
That says a lot of for the level of security and privacy that the technology market is providing for its customers.

Why doesn't the FBI give the NSA a crack at it?
(Then again, they probably can't do any better)

Looks like they may have to pay that Israeli firm that hacked into the San Bernardino muslim killer's phone another job.

Addendum:
It looks like the phone -was- an iPhone.

Send the phone to China.  They can unlock it.

Or Taiwan, or Korea, or Vietnam....all of which might be where it is made, designed, etc.

A couple of months back, I was in the market for a new cell phone. I learned that while most phones, Apple iPhones come with internal storage locked down from the start. Buy a 16GB, or 32Gb etc.

Anyway I then saw a video from somewhere in Asia whereby a techy guy was taking an iPhone completely apart, showing it was possible to add memory.

Whereas for an Android you simply by a micro-SD card and put it in yourself,,..for $10-40.

The reason I say China is because they already have the encryption.  The very code which Apple refused to give to the US government, they have already given to the Chinese government.  It was the only way the PRC would allow Apple access to the Chinese market.
