To survive, we need to take nutrients from the food that we eat. This is achieved by digestion, a complicated process that takes place in our gut.
Although food contains all of the nutrients we need for good health, they are locked up in large, complex compounds. So that they can be used by the body, they must first be broken into smaller parts by the process of digestion.
