A Patient's Guide to Lung Cancer

Know the basics on symptoms, diagnosis and treatment to help as you battle the disease.

Nothing about cancer is fair. With improved breast cancer treatments and diagnosis, the average five-year survival rate for people with breast cancer now stands at about 89 percent, medical oncologist Dr. Nathan Pennell wrote for U.S. News in 2015. But lung cancer is a different animal.

The five-year survival rate for all patients with lung and bronchus cancer was 18.1 percent for the years 2007-2013 according to the National Cancer Institute. But that varies considerably depending on what stage the cancer is when first diagnosed. So early diagnosis is key and that means watching for telltale symptoms including a cough that doesn’t go away or produces blood; or pain in the chest, upper back or shoulder.
