Spain was plunged into crisis Friday as Madrid seized power from independence-seeking Catalonia, the first curtailment of regional autonomy since the brutal dictatorship of Francisco Franco.

After regional lawmakers voted to declare a Catalan “republic,” Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy moved swiftly to dissolve the rebel government and parliament, and called Dec. 21 elections to replace them.

Isn't Rajoy "dissolving" the Catalan Parliament a little like Lord North or George III "dissolving" the Continental Congress post-July 4, 1776?

The streets for Barcelona hardly look like Spain has seized control of anything.

Time will tell whether the Catalans can successfully imitate our Founders, or perhaps Gandhi, and either fight or shame Spain into recognizing their declaration of independence.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

Yes, like Lincoln doing the same wit the Confederacy.

Starting to wonder if there's going to be a European spring here.
The Republic is lost.

Since in many areas of Europe, guns are not widely owned, the prospects of prevailing against the police+military do not look good.

OTOH if a big majority want independence, I can't see the police+military holding them back forever.

One might have expected this to occur earlier in the Basque region where it brewed for decades and still does.

"Spain on a knife’s edge as Madrid seizes control of rebel Catalonia"

The only way that Catalonia is going to win its "independence" is by defeating Madrid's forces in a Second Spanish Civil War.

Are they willing to try that?
