In commenting on Sen. Jeff Flake's announcement that he was retiring rather than seeking a second term in the Senate, Ben Domenech of the Federalist wrote that Flake's "brand changed dramatically."

I take a different view: Flake, R-Ariz., in his 12 years in the House and five years in the Senate has taken consistent views. His strong free-market conservatism on economic issues led him to oppose former President George W. Bush's Medicare prescription drug bill and TARP legislation, as well as the 2001-02 No Child Left Behind bill. He supported "comprehensive" immigration legislation in the House (for which John Boehner booted him from the Judiciary Committee) and in the Senate (as a member of the "Gang of Eight").

So Barone is arguing that we need to corral all the Mormons like Flakey, McMuffin and Mittens in Utah?

Well if hes says so why not.

This is one of those rare times I think Barone is FOS.  Ben Domenech is correct, Barrone is not.

Well if hes says so why not.

Barrone is putting too much stress on the Mormon brand.  It may be a sure-fire vote-getter in Utah, and a sure-fire vote-killer in 'Bama, but it's a wash in Arizona.  Not a big pull either way.  Flake got in trouble with his constituents thinking Illegal Immigrants are just great, and that doesn't set well with people who have been victims of border crime.  McCain gets away with it because of his Official War Hero status (and soon to be blowing-up-head status), but Flake gets no such break.
