Celebrate National Bologna Day With A Bounty Of Bologna Facts
« on: October 24, 2017, 07:06:25 pm »
It’s the meat with a first name, beloved by chefs such as Michael Symon and David Chang and enjoyed around the country for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Whether you spell it bologna or baloney, it’s a lifelong favorite that we celebrate every October 24 for National Bologna Day. This year, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC) and Beef Checkoff are celebrating by unveiling a new guide to bologna that details all of the important bologna facts including its origin, how it’s made, different bologna styles, fun facts and recipes. Bologna fans can also test their knowledge with a bologna quiz and check out a range of bologna recipes.

“Bologna is an American classic that links us back to our childhoods,” said NHDSC President Eric Mittenthal. “No matter how it is served, it is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.”

Bologna = raw hot dog

Raw hot dog = 3D bologna

Bologna, hot dogs, and canned tuna are single dude staples - even when you can cook, but don’t feel like it.

In western PA bologna is known as jumbo.  When my cousin got married and moved to Maryland, she wen to the deli department of the local supermarket and asked for a half pound of jumbo.  The clerk said, "huh?'  A man standing in line behind my cousin said "she means bologna."  Turned out the man was a native of western PA too.

My Dad used to grill bologna or we would fry it.  It had to be cut thick like a steak.  Really tasted good fried or grilled.

A Fried Bologna with egg sandwich on whole wheat with mayo used to be my Morning Bible Study meal.

I grew up with the 'Bologna, pickles, and cheese' sandwich, which is a ubiquitous staple in our house.

Even today, I get a hankering now and then.

Crappy white bread
buttered bottom slice, mayo top slice
bologna
american cheese
dill slices.

serve with potato chips.

Perfect.

When my mom wasn't around, my dad would make us fried bologna.  And teach us topology.  We learned that we had to cut a slice into the disk to account for the changes in shape as it cooked.

Possibly, but it came up under an image search for ‘fried bologna sandwich’ and looks very similar to the thick-cut presentation served at the local dive bar I visit from time to time.

Well if you like fried bologna you should try fried pork roll if you get to the Tri-state area. I am pretty sure it is still a regional thing.

I was never a fan of fried bologna.

For me, Tobin's First Prize on a poppy seed hard roll with some Miracle Whip is just fine.
