"Spam is on lockdown.
The canned commodity, wildly popular in Hawaii, has been the target for a string of burglaries on the island state — prompting many retailers to lock away the meat product behind walls of plastic, the Washington Post reported.
“Items electronically monitored for theft,” a sign in front of Spam under lock and key at an Oahu Walgreens read this week.
Last month in the same area, Safeway customer Arlene Sua watched a man load up with eight cases of the meat product and head straight out the door.
“Okay this isn’t real,” she recalled thinking in an interview with KHON. “No he’s not going to take it, no, no.”
At Long’s Drugstore, a trio of women filled their shopping carts with 18 cases of Spam and nearly made a clean getaway with their bounty, according to KITV4.
Meanwhile, the Honolulu Police Department is offering a $1,000 reward for a man who grabbed a case of spam from a downtown mall and punched a security guard as he escaped."<snip>
