The "wet start" story is a bogus thing someone made up, @DiogenesLamp.

In fact, the rocket was fired because of an electrical surge in an F-4 Phantom II that was on the opposite end of the deck, 100 feet away.

Bump and I can not stand McCain.

But none of those situations applies to McCain. He is simply a replaceable cog in a gigantic machine. There is no vital reason for him to cling to his job.

He's replaceable... Exactly.   Replaced by someone who doesn't hold his views.

Sure, a lot of his current activities have been out of spite and self-aggrandizement, etc.  But I believe he's fairly liberal for a Republican, and he holds those beliefs strongly.  So there is something vital he's doing -- holding up things in the Senate.

If you were the last vote to prevent socialist expansion of America, would you not feel obligated to cling and fight to obstruct your opponents?

I disagree with the man's politics, and I get the feeling he has a nasty temperament -- including wanting to cause trouble now -- but that doesn't mean we should defame him based on lies.  Think about it -- how would you feel if liberals posted things about conservatives with "I've read this story . . ." without fact-checking first?
He has done plenty to gig him for, but the fire was not his fault.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I will put it in the "disputed" column until I see more information.

In fact, the rocket was fired because of an electrical surge in an F-4 Phantom II that was on the opposite end of the deck, 100 feet away.

Several years ago I saw a documentary that claimed the official cause of the rocket firing was blamed on the positioning of a jet powered generator beneath the wing of the aircraft from which the rocket fired.  The hot exhaust gases of the generator were said to have caused the rocket to "cook off".   So now I've got three different stories to wade through.

That is a common occurrence.  I'm thinking this example is not very helpful to your point.  :)

Whatever one thinks of McCain, the facts are important.

And what are the "facts",  and how are we to know they are actually "facts"?   As i've said,  so far i've heard three stories about what happened.  Which one is true?  Are any of them true?

Worth watching:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfxUpFaJBME

McCain's aircraft was one hit by the Zuni rocket, which came across the deck. His plane was facing inboard, and wasn't the initial source of trouble.

Whether the Zuni fired because of an electrical fault or a wet start, it wasn't McCain's plane in either case that caused that. The Zuni apparently ruptured the drop tank on the plane it hit, next to McCain's and the fire set off 1,000 lb bombs which not only injured/killed firefighting crews, but created more problems.

McCain has done enough dastardly deeds that whether he caused the fire matters not.  I’m much more concerned with his actions in regards to POWs and MIAs that never made it home.

The list is long of his misdeeds that are factual. Leaving out those in question won’t make him a better man. He is far from a hero in my book, captured or not.
