A 53-year-old man who is seeking asylum in the United States after surviving an assassination attempt by a violent drug cartel in Mexico was sentenced to nine years in federal prison Wednesday for sale of large quantities of methamphetamine in eastern Oregon and eastern Washington.

U.S. District Chief Judge Michael W. Mosman accepted a prosecutor's recommendation and sentenced Uriel Birrueta Zepeda, 53, to nine years in prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Zepeda, 53, has lived on and off in the United States since 1981. His defense lawyer argued for a lower sentence of five years, asking the judge to consider Zepeda's past.
