Producers claim they couldn't ignore election events of November 2016 — 'Klingons are helping us look at our country'


As fans of the franchise will know, “Star Trek” has never been a series to shy away from political allegories. It seems that the upcoming new installment in the franchise, “Star Trek Discovery,” will be no exception.


Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Aaron Harbert revealed the 2016 election was fresh in their minds during development of the CBS All Access series, and that it shows in the overall themes that it tackles.


“The Klingons are going to help us really look at certain sides of ourselves and our country. Isolationism is a big theme. Racial purity is a big theme. The Klingons are not the enemy, but they do have a different view on things,” he says. “It raises big questions: Should we let people in? Do we want to change? There’s also the question of just because you reach your hand out to someone, do they have to take it? Sometimes, they don’t want to take it. It’s been interesting to see how the times have become more of a mirror than we even thought they were going to be.”

Idiots.  Roddenberry, no shrinking violet in the political arena personally, would have these writers taken out and shot for this.  Sure, STOS blazed a couple of trails (1st interracial kiss, etc), but they didn't go all-out to throw away half the audience.

The previews along turned me off. The characters all seem to have that liberal, haughty, dismissive arrogance because they were obviously superior intellectual beings that held to the correct enlightened doctrines.

True. Star Trek has always been utopian and political, but it was always a sidebar. "Let that be your last battlefield" was the episode about the guy who was half black and half white, who hated the other guy who was half white and half black. This was obviously an episode about the silliness of judging people by the color of their skin (a lesson Liberals have yet to learn).

But it was about healing and bringing people together. These latest shows and movies pushing the Liberal agenda, are all about 'hate' and divisiveness. There is nothing 'healing' about it. White people and anyone who supports Trump is EVIL, and needs to be shunned and punished. This is the opposite of a 'positive' message.

Since Trump, Hollywood has stopped even pretending that the stuff they produce is more Liberal propaganda than it is entertainment. They say so openly and proudly. Hollywood has essentially become the propaganda wing of the Democrat Party. And it does not matter how much money they lose doing it. The agenda is more important to them than anything.

Anyone with common sense knows that propaganda is no way to make money. All we can do is to wait for them to go bankrupt, which may very well happen if they keep this nonsense up.

I am a big Star Trek fan. But even I am not going to pay to see a film that both the producers and the actors are openly saying is designed to be anti-Trump propaganda.

BBC has been showing the original Star Treks and I've watched a few.  It's great to hear the old message untouched by PC ... 'to boldly go where no man has gone before.'

If you can take the primitive look of the background, it's quite entertaining.

This actually seems to be canon for Klingons. It sounds more like a classic Rorschach Test, people see in it what they want or where their own viewpoints lay.

I watched the very first episode ... Where No Man Has Gone Before ... yesterday.

The two guest leads looked so familiar.  Turns out the gal psychiatrist was Sally Kellerman, who later starred in MASH (the movie).

It was quite the love story.

Rodenberry lampooned flower children too. Like him or not, at least his relative impartiality gave him some credibility  to lecture on higher morality.

I wouldn't cross the street to expel a certain bodily fluid on anything to do with Rottenbury's collectivist nonsense if it were on fire.

If this one is more PC than the others it's because the franchise is that much less relevant than it used to be.

Star Trek was always a collectivist pantload.

With all the wanna be writers grinding out scripts that the money people could find Tons of screenplays with a different angle.

But no. It's Show Biz. With a heavy emphasis on the Biz end.

"It's gotta be Just like the Last $300 million dollar grosser from 6 weeks ago, . . . but different."

So they option a script or buy it outright, and then stick their grubby fingers into it, all of them, at every level,  again and again.

Re-write, Rewrite, and Re-write until it's guaranteed to insult the Fewest possible consumers while delivering the maximum onscreen explosions and ridiculously undeveloped cliffhangers involving characters with all the personality of a Macy's Day Parade Float.

Comedian Jay Mohr has made some very dumb/Liberal statements in his bid to become relevant again.

But almost 20 years ago he had a 1 season TV go called Action.

The Movie Business at it's finest.

If you look it up on youtube, and are insulted or outraged, be it on your own head. It's filthy.

As a writer you can start out with a good, solid script about, Ohhh, say Pirates, (or anything/anywhere else) and after the money people get their mitts into it, it Will go through a Series of other screenwriters hands with directions to make a change or two here and there until the film itself is in a Siberian Gulag full of Gay Sheep Herders.

Alexandra Sokoloff writes Paranormal Romances. She was a paid, creative writing teacher. And She did a decade of screen writing for the Biz.

Ordinarily, her advice on writing, books on the craft, are very positive with specific examples for writers to emulate.

It's only when she talks about screen writing that the claws come out, . . . because she's BTDT.

Like I said, it's filthy, but for me, the Final Episode of Jay Mohr's series 'Action' - The Last Ride of The Elephant Princess - is about as candid a look at the Movie Biz as we're ever going to need.

Just Blatant.

I was  slightly more than 8 and I loved them.  At the time, we'd never seen anything like them

I felt some trepidation about watching the original episodes because, you know, you can't go home again, but I've found them to be good and entertaining once you get over the jarring primitive look of the background.

Of course you'd cash the check. So would I and anyone else. But that still doesn't make script by committee any desideratum. My point isn't that things SHOULD be different. They simply are the way they are.

I seem to remember that Amy Wallace said her Dad Irving Wallace had had the best of all possible business relationships with the film industry. 20 of his books were optioned, and None of them were ever turned into actual movies.

Talk about having your cake and eating it too.

:) I have no more desire to shoot you than I have to sit through a cinematic PC-ed lowering of the age of enjoyment from 8 to 5 or 6.

My top Star Trek memory was an out take from a gag reel.

It was in the alternate history/planet timeline where the NAZIs were in charge.

The scene was in the jail. Kirk was in the aisle between cells and Ted Cassidy (Lurch) came running full tilt onto the set costumed as a Conan the Barbarian, hefted Shatner up like a kid's doll and ran off with him.

The originals were socially conscious. Well written Shakespearian plays for tv.   I am not confidant the millennials writing in hollywierd today are as conscious. So I say ...I bet ....it will suck.
