Caffeine, the widely consumed stimulant and igniter of sluggish mornings, has been found to temper taste buds temporarily, making food and drink seem less sweet, according to new Cornell University research.

Caffeine is a powerful antagonist of adenosine receptors, which promote relaxation and sleepiness. Suppressing the receptors awakens people but decreases their ability to taste sweetness—which, ironically, may make them desire it more.

They are all over Amazon. My granddaughter picked up a bag at a gas stop when we were on the road back from MD, and they are my new favorite. They are the only M&Ms I can just eat a few of and then come back to later (if I hide the bag).

Joe, tell me the truth, did you really get any coffee flavor from those?  I bought a little bag of them at Walmart about a year ago after they won the M&M taste test.  They were sweet, but I swear I didn't get the coffee note.

But then I'm biased because I only really want dark chocolate M&Ms in the purple bag, so Freya, don't pay attention to me.

Yes, I did, but I'd been on the road for a few hours without any coffee. The ones I had were good, and had a definite coffee note. That fades if you eat a lot of them, so I'd only have 4 or 5 at a time-- which is good because I can normally eat the huge bag by myself if I don't exercise some self restraint.

Yep!  As in, it's a miracle after staying up until 3 am reading (because it's so blessedly quiet in the house) I can function through the day. :)

For me it caused such nasty anxiety I ended up in the er, with a diagnosis of severe gerd and orders from my doctor and nutritionist to give it up.
