The Venetians had a more recent historical memory of dealing with jihadis going into the current phase of the long war between Islam and the West than anyone else. For a long time after the Ottoman Sultans had gone pragmatic and simply wanted to comfortably rule their empire, following the Ottoman defeats at Lepanto and Vienna, there was an island, held by the Serene Republic of Venice, against which the Sultans would send any jihad enthusiasts. The attacks were quite futile, as the island was heavily fortified, could be resupplied by sea, and the Venetians had control of the seas. But it solved a problem for the Sultan/Caliph by simultaneously letting those who wanted to follow the traditional reading of the Qu'ran and Hadiths wage jihad and getting all the jihadis killed off.
