Lost cities of the Midwest: A trek back to pre-Columbian times
Lost cities of the Midwest

Go back in time -- way back -- with a visit to these pre-Columbian cities not far from Chicago.
David HammondChicago Tribune

The Midwest is filled with ghosts, the spirits of those who lived here centuries ago. Their presence can be felt at what remains of their ancient cities — some now official historic sites, others buried by time and bulldozers, likely lost forever.

Tens of millions of people walked this land for millennia before Europeans and others set foot upon what is now America. This was once their world, home to a vast network of indigenous civilizations. These people left material remains, including burial mounds and monumental earthworks, pyramid structures that towered over our Midwestern Plains.
