Trump officials celebrate first coal shipment to Ukraine
Washington Examiner, Aug 21, 2017, John Siciliano

The Trump administration on Monday celebrated the first-ever shipment of U.S. coal to the Ukraine, saying it wants to make more of America's abundant energy resources available to its allies.

"This shipment will boost both of our country's economies by supporting jobs in the coal and transportation industries," said Energy Secretary Rick Perry. "The department and this administration look forward to making available even more of our abundant natural resources to allies like Ukraine in the future to promote their own energy security through diversity of supply and source."

Perry said the coal shipment will offer a "secure and reliable energy source" for Ukraine's national utility, Centrenergo, and its electricity customers.

Ukraine's utility signed a deal last month to buy U.S. coal from Pennsylvania soon after President Trump met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in June.

The shipment will depart the coal terminal in Baltimore later this week and arrive in Ukraine several weeks later, the Energy Department said.

Coal production in Ukraine decreased by 37% from 2014 to 2015, primarily because much of Ukraine's coal is located in contested territory in the eastern part of the country. As a result, Ukraine faced significant coal deficits, which led to power outages and costly imports from Russia. Ukraine began to reduce dependency on Russian coal imports in 2015 by diversifying supplies to include greater amounts from the United States, Australia, Kazakhstan, and others.

We have been exporting coal to the Ukraine since 2005.  Since 2010 it has been at least 2 million tons per year.
