Six police officers were shot, one of them fatally, in three separate gun incidents in Florida and Pennsylvania late Friday, officials said.

One officer was killed and another gravely injured in Kissimmee, just south of the theme park hub of Orlando, central Florida.

Two officers were critically wounded in Jacksonville, while two state troopers were shot in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

In Kissimmee, officers Sam Howard and Matthew Baxter were checking suspects in an area of the city for drug activity when they were shot, Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O'Dell said at a news conference. They did not have an opportunity to return fire.

"They were surprised," O'Dell said. When asked whether they were ambushed, he said, "It's too early to tell, but it's leading that way."

Baxter, a three-year veteran of the department, died later in a hospital and Howard, a 10-year veteran, was in serious condition, O'Dell said. Baxter, who was married to another officer, has three young children.

The officers were checking three of the suspects when a fourth opened fire. One of the original three suspects fled and was being sought, and the other three were arrested. Broadcaster WFTV showed aerial footage of police cars with lights flashing swarmed a housing complex as the search continued early Saturday morning.

Fairchance, Pa., is a quiet little town. 

Two state police troopers were shot Friday night in Fairchance, Fayette County, and a suspect in the incident is dead, according to WPXI-TV.

The incident occurred at about 9 p.m. near the Shop 'n Save supermarket on West Church Street.

Both troopers were transported for hospital treatment and were alert and responsive, the station reported.

State police at the Uniontown station and Fayette County Coroner Dr. Phillip Reilly would not release details Friday. A message left with the Fairchance Police Department wasn't immediately returned.

I was expecting Uniontown.  Years ago, my father had cousins living there, and we would sometimes take a road trip to see them.  Nice place.  Went through Uniontown a few years ago and it was awful.  Uniontown was blue collar (mills and mines), and like other such towns, once the industry vanished, the city went all to hell.  Sad.

ALL of these fringe groups should be investigated and the real leaders (the ones who are directing and financing them) should be prosecuted.  I don't care if they are left, right, black, white, gay, straight, pseudo conservative, commie, whatever.  All of them have one goal -- to bring down this country -- and all of them must be shut down.

I disagree to some extent. If law enforcement goes after BLM, it will just turn them into martyrs and "political prisoners" a la Nelson Mandela.

The correct course of action is to completely delegitimize them in the public sphere, just like White Nationalists. Web companies should be just as quick to take down their hateful web sites. Companies who employ their members should be ready to fire them if their members are outed. We need to use the same tactics the left is using. Find the people who say, "More dead police officers. Not sad" on twitter and get them publicly ostracized.

The perp in Fairchance, Pa., was white, for what it's worth. My appreciation for his having assumed room temperature was not dependent upon the hue of his skin. Not sure how BLM came into this discussion anyway.

Second Kissimmee (Florida) Police Officer dies after Friday night shooting (and perp caught)

A second Kissimmee Police officer has died after a Friday night attack on law enforcement.

Sgt. Richard “Sam” Howard died Saturday from gunshot wounds he suffered when he and fellow officer Matthew Baxter were shot during a routine stop in the McLaren Circle area, according to a department spokeswoman.

Baxter died Friday night shortly after the shooting.

Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O’Dell said the officers were investigating three suspicious people about 9:30 p.m. near Palmway and Cypress streets when a “scuffle” broke out. That’s when police say Marine veteran Everett Glenn Miller, 45, shot the officers.

The officers — who were wearing body armor underneath their uniforms — did not have a chance to return fire. O’Dell said “it looked like they were surprised” by the gunfire.

Miller fled to Roscoe’s Bar at 2344 N. Orange Blossom Trail, where Osceola County Sheriff’s Office detectives found him about 11:30 p.m. When the officers approached him, Miller reached for his waistband — but a fast-acting deputy tackled him to the ground and arrested him, O’Dell said.

“Extremely brave and heroic actions by the deputy, there were other pople in the vicinity,” O’Dell said. “They went hands-on, tackled him to the ground and secured him [and] located a a 9mm and .22 revolver on his person.
