Updates: Masked counter-protesters already out at Boston Free Speech rally

Jazz ShawPosted at 11:31 am on August 19, 2017

12:35 – We’re not very far into events and we’ve already seen some thankfully low level action. One woman holding an American flag had it grabbed and she was dragged along the ground for a ways. Wound up crying, but apparently not seriously injured. Meanwhile, the Antifa is out in force. As this Fox News video shows, many of them showed up wearing black bandanas over their faces. But those are the exceptions. The Left has a lot of marchers with signs and their faces uncovered. Video is only about three minutes.

Cops say the free speech rally is over.  It is 1:35 pm central time I heard that.  Another group is those who are marching against "hate" and that is still ongoing.  I think those are Black Lives Matter.

Tim Kaine's son bear sprayed an older woman and hit a 17 year old girl in the face, he was arrested.

This is basically anti-fa, I heard a whole litany of offenses they have done.

By the way, these people today were the "free speech side", they were not the hate side, reportedly no neo-nazis or Klan types,  one of the news networks said they had controversial speakers but did not say whom.

Another thing I remember, is that counter protester types, antifa, beat an assistant to Dana Roerbacher, Rep-California, they beat her unconscious. So, the heck with the media narrative. Trump should have been more clear on how violent antifa is as well.

Counterprotesters Surge Into Boston, Overshadowing Rally

By KATHARINE Q. SEELYE, ALAN BLINDER and JESS BIDGOOD     |     AUG. 18, 2017

The epicenter of the weekend’s demonstrations appeared to be here in Boston, where the Common had been the expected setting for a pair of protests, including one that the Boston Free Speech Coalition organized before the Charlottesville violence. Organizers said they were appealing to “libertarians, conservatives, traditionalists, classical liberals, Trump supporters or anyone else who enjoys their right to free speech.”

But supporters of the free speech rally, scheduled for noon, faced thousands of counterprotesters, many of whom marched toward the Common from the Roxbury neighborhood.

As the minutes ticked by on a day that began with fog but became hot and sticky, counterdemonstrators shouted, “Scum! Scum!”

~snip~

A spokesman for the Boston police, Lt. Detective Mike McCarthy, said the free speech demonstrators had “decided they were done, and they left the Common.” The police escorted them as chants of “Shame!” rained down from the crowd.

Rondre Brooks, 36, who said he had traveled from Detroit for the counterdemonstration, said he was pleased to see the apparent early end of the free speech rally. “It’s a very good look for America as a whole,” he said.

But another man, who said he supported the speech rally and gave his name, after some hesitation, as Matt Staley, interjected to ask if those demonstrating in support of free speech were not Americans, too.

“I think it’s awful that people can’t speak out to express opinions,” Mr. Staley said.

The counterprotesters descended on the Common for hours before the planned rally, and they found fliers showing symbols of white supremacists and neo-Nazis. The leaflet, which protesters appeared to have prepared, urged people to “learn to identify these symbols and let anyone displaying them know that they are not welcome in our city!”  .  .  .

Liberty cannot survive nor exist in such a toxic atmosphere.

And, it is becoming self-evident that we can no longer peaceably co-exist.
Fart for freedom, fart for liberty and fart proudly.  - Benjamin Franklin

...Obsta principiis—Nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud, is the only maxim which can ever preserve the liberties of any people. When the people give way, their deceivers, betrayers and destroyers press upon them so fast that there is no resisting afterwards. The nature of the encroachment upon [the] American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer, it eats faster and faster every hour." - John Adams, February 6, 1775

Trump condemns 'anti-police agitators' as clashes break out after FIFTEEN THOUSAND anti-fascist protesters gather in Boston to completely outnumber a handful of 'free speech' activists at rally
Daily Mail/UK, Aug 19, 2017

Fifteen-thousand anti-fascist protesters marched through the streets of Boston in protest against right-wing activists hosting a 'free speech' rally on Saturday.

Some of the counter-protesters clashed with police after the largely peaceful march through the city that ended when the handful of activists who attended the free speech rally left.

President Trump was quick to respond to the demonstration, unlike his response to Charlottesville last week, and tweeted out: 'Looks like many anti-police agitators in Boston. Police are looking tough and smart! Thank you.'

Out of the thousands in attendance, 27 people were arrested following bottles of urine and rocks being thrown at police and when some burned a Confederate flag and pounded on the sides of a police vehicle at Boston Common.

However, Trump later added: 'I want to applaud the many protestors in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate. Our country will soon come together as one!'

The city mayor had pleaded for counter-protesters to stay away, saying their presence would draw more attention to the far-right activists and could result in violence.

However, opponents of the right-wing took over the event, chanting anti-Nazi slogans and waving signs condemning white nationalism, in order to stand against what they thought could have turned into a platform for racist propaganda.

The small right-wing group huddled in a circle at the park as barricades fenced them off from the thousands upon thousands of counter-protesters who came to drown out their event.

Around an hour after the rally's start time of noon, the few dozen who came for the free speech event left their enclosed area as police helped escort the planned speakers from the park.

Although the event was cut short and the anti-fascist protesters greatly outnumbered the right-wing attendees, some counter-protesters squared off against riot police, following the outrage of the tragic events last week.

The Latest: 27 arrests at rallies; Trump applauds people
25 News/Boston, Updated: Aug 19, 2017 - 5:25 PM, Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) - The Latest on a conservative rally and counterdemonstration in Boston and around the country (all times local):

5:25 p.m.

Boston police say 27 arrests were made during the conservative activist rally and counterdemonstration on Boston Common.

Commissioner William Evans says Saturday's events went off "as planned," with no one hurt or killed. Most of the arrests were for disorderly conduct. Some were for assaulting police officers.

Thousands of demonstrators chanting anti-Nazi slogans converged Saturday morning on downtown Boston, dwarfing a smaller group of conservatives staging their own "free speech rally." The conservatives left shortly after their arrival.

Evans and Democratic Mayor Marty Walsh praised law enforcement for monitoring the demonstrations, which drew about 40,000 people.

President Donald Trump is applauding the people in Boston who he says are "speaking out" against bigotry and hate.

Trump adds in a Twitter message that "Our country will soon come together as one!"

___

4 p.m.

President Donald Trump is complimenting the Boston police on Twitter for their handling of the rallies minutes before the police department tweeted asking people to stop throwing items at them.

Trump tweeted Saturday afternoon, "Looks like many anti-police agitators in Boston. Police are looking tough and smart! Thank you."

Trump also complimented Boston's Democratic Mayor Marty Walsh.

Boston Police Department tweeted shortly after that urine, rocks and bottles were being thrown at officers and were asking people to refrain from doing so.

Thousands of demonstrators chanting anti-Nazi slogans converged Saturday morning on downtown Boston, dwarfing a smaller group of conservatives staging their own "free speech rally." The conservatives left the rally around 1 p.m., shortly after their arrival.

The Boston Globe reports about 20 arrests had been made.

At the press conference, the police chief mainly stayed out of saying anything political; but he did say his officers were hit with bottles of urine and that they arrested 3 people in "ballistics vests" and in one of the vests was a gun.

Also, per the small freedom of speech crowd, the police chief said they evacuated them in "wagons" to avoid confrontations.

Sounds like the police overall did very well. Yes, there were those arrests.

In Virginia, supposedly there is or there may be a felony mask law. They are looking at this.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/tripping/wp/2016/10/06/clowns-beware-masks-can-be-illegal-in-virginia-as-a-biker-found-out-before-he-changed-the-law/?utm_term=.5c1f1c243c0f

Sounds like there is a law with some exceptions, riding a bike in cold weather in the winter, etc.

So, potentially, in Va., one could throw the book at such protesters.
