Governor Abbott Continues to Call Out House Leadership
« on: August 18, 2017, 01:47:02 pm »
Empower Texans by Austin Goss 8/17/2017

The usually mild-mannered Governor has gone on the offensive against the Texas House after they failed taxpayers yet again.

n the aftermath of a failed special session, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has laid blame at the feet of the House leadership in general, and the speaker of the House in particular.

During a radio interview, Abbott directed blame almost exclusively at House Speaker Joe Straus and noted that nine of the items on his twenty-point list did not even receive a vote. When asked if Straus had any part in the blame on this, he replied, “Well, of course.”

Abbott has also stated that voters didn’t send the legislatures to Austin to hide behind things like “parliamentary procedure.”

“It’s clear by the fact that these items that did not pass, did not even get out of committee, that he [Speaker Straus] had some or total control over that process. But what we need to find out is we need the members to go back home to their districts. They need to hear from their citizens, from their constituents and their constituents need to let their members know about the importance of these issues,” Abbott said in an interview with KXAN.

Along with his harsh criticism and blame on the House, Abbott did not rule out potentially calling a second special session to address some of the issues from his agenda which the House failed to prioritize. Abbott specifically noted that he was most dissatisfied with the House’s refusal to pass substantive property tax reforms.

On Thursday, Abbott stated that after the House watered down the Senate’s property tax reform bill, passing the remaining legislation would “not have made any meaningful reforms.”

One of the reasons that made the move out of Texas much easier to take... not missing my super high Prop Tax in Keller.

The Strauss family made its money supporting gambling interests.  Don't put it past them blackmailing to get the lucrative prize of casinos into Texas.

Think Texas is bad? Try retiring in California in your own home.

When the time comes I'll need to find a cave in the Sutter Buttes.

He's the best!   Sometimes I think what a shame he isn't in the White House.

Will take more than that to leave my beloved state.  Strauss has a political target on him now, and Abbott is savy enough to exploit it.

Every year starting in 08 I filed an appeal.  Lost two at a Tarrant Co appraisal board hearing.  Then I figured out the scam they pull on the unsuspecting home owner.  The following years I did it online and had mine rolled back 3 times.  Not a lot, mind you but they seemed to auto approve 10-15% reductions just to make you go away!

Yep, an appraisal protest is part of an annual tradition at our house.  Very few of us take the time and effort to do so.  And you are right.....   they don't want confrontation or a protest at an appraisal board hearing.

ALL of this goes back to Bob Bullock's (former Lt. Gov.) promise!  "Before I'm done they will be begging for a state income tax!"

I look at things a bit differently.

I would rather pay more in local taxes, than in State or Federal Taxes, because the things that my local taxes pay for affect me more than the stuff that goes to the State and Federal Level. If anything, we should pay more in Local taxes than at the higher levels.

I don't disagree!  But paying your taxes should NOT put you under the thumb of government!  ALL they need to do to fix this is to broaden the base of the sales tax to include services  and the can LOWER the rate $.02 and collect more than they do from current property taxes and the sales tax combined!

What a POS he turned out to be!

Sorry, but that is an affront to fecal matter of all kinds.

He really truly deserves the Gunny Hartman treatment.

I protested in Harris County and got a $2500 yearly savings.

The appraisal board were so impressed with my thoroughness they asked if I could join the board.

Now that is one way to eliminate the opposition - assimilate them.

While the sentiment speaks for itself as most of us wish more things to be local, the real entity in any state that is responsible for collecting taxes is the State.

I would far prefer I pay less to the Feds than more to local.
