In the 1940s, lightning killed more than 300 people a year. So far this year, there have been 13 fatalities - putting the U.S. on a path for an estimated record low of 17, according to The Associated Press.

Meteorologists and experts say the shift is likely two-fold: People have learned to go indoors to avoid bad weather, and there are fewer farmers and other outside jobs that make people easy targets during a lightning storm. emphasis mine

Kind of surprising considering all the geniuses I see out on the lake in thunderstorms.
