General George Washington:
"To the various branches of the Army the General takes this last and solemn opportunity of professing his inviolable attachment and friendship. He wishes more than bare professions were in his power, that he were really able to be useful to them all in future life. He flatters himself however, they will do him the justice to believe, that whatever could with propriety be attempted by him has been done, and being now to conclude these his last public Orders, to take his ultimate leave in a short time of the military character, and to bid a final adieu to the Armies he has so long had the honor to Command, he can only again offer in their behalf his recommendations to their grateful country, and his prayers to the God of Armies."
General Dwight D. Eisenhower:
"I have full confidence in your devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory! Good Luck! And let us all beseech blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking."
General George S. Patton:
"An army is a team. It lives, eats, sleeps, and fights as a team. This individual hero stuff is bullshit. The bilious bastards who write that stuff for the Saturday Evening Post don't know any more about real battle than they do about f***ing. And we have the best team—we have the finest food and equipment, the best spirit and the best men in the world. Why, by God, I actually pity these poor bastards we're going up against."
Would any of these men find themselves welcome in today's hypersensitive, politically correct, and deliberately agnostic military leadership?
