Trump called New Hampshire a 'drug-infested den' in call to Mexico

By Jordan Fabian - 08/03/17 10:00 AM EDT

President Trump called New Hampshire a “drug-infested den” during a heated phone call in January with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, according to a transcript obtained by The Washington Post and published on Thursday.

Trump during the call blasted Nieto over the flow of illegal drugs across the border into the U.S.

“We have a massive drug problem where kids are becoming addicted to drugs because the drugs are being sold for less money than candy,” the president said. “I won New Hampshire because New Hampshire is a drug-infested den.”

Trump won the Republican presidential primary in the Granite State but lost there to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the general election.

During the campaign, Trump spoke frequently about how drug addiction was hurting places like New Hampshire. But it’s highly unusual for a U.S. president to paint such a bleak picture of a state in a call with a foreign leader.

His comments sparked a furious reaction from New Hampshire's elected officials.

Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) in a tweet on Thursday called Trump's comments about her state "disgusting."

“As he knows, NH and states across America have a substance misuse crisis,” she said.

I've never been a fan of blaming the dealers for the existence of users.

Don't blame them for users.

Kill em on sight on general principles though, same as any profiteer.

Without users, there would be no dealers.

Without Dealers, users would figure something out.

Republican gov: 'The president is wrong' about New Hampshire

By Rebecca Savransky - 08/03/17 11:40 AM EDT

New Hampshire's Republican Gov. Chris Sununu on Thursday shot back at President Trump for his "mischaracterization" of the state after a report that Trump called it a "drug-infested den."

"The president is wrong. It's disappointing his mischaracterization of this epidemic ignores the great things this state has to offer," Sununu said in a statement.

"Our administration inherited one of the worst health crises this state has ever experienced, but we are facing this challenged head on," he said.

The governor said New Hampshire has doubled its resources to support prevention, treatment and recovery efforts for opioid addiction. He added that the state has "dedicated millions to law enforcement efforts to keep drugs" out and is "rebuilding" its prevention programs for kids.

"We are already seeing positive signs of our efforts as overdoses and deaths are declining in key parts of the state," he said.

Trump is exaggerating but there is a substantial heroin and opiod problem in the non-metro parts of New England: Maine, NH, Vermont, and many parts of CT and Massachusetts.

Candidate Trump was very vocal about the heroin epidemic in New Hampshire ... during rallies in NH and across the nation.  Folks in NH  reacted with relief and applause that he was aware of what was happening and was going to help stop the flow of drugs.
