In an apparent attempt to curtail the culture of leaks, Attorney General Jeff Sessions plans this week to hold a press conference in which he will release figures showing an increase in the number of such cases pursued so far this year, compared to all of 2016, Axios reported on Monday.

Administration officials have said the reason for the increase in leak cases is due to both more leaking going on, particularly by appointees of former President Barack Obama who remain in government, and because the Justice Department is being increasingly aggressive in going after the violators.

The expected announcement comes following a week in which President Donald Trump harshly criticized Sessions, including that the attorney general should "be much tougher on the leaks from intelligence agencies," CNN reports.

That demand was then amplified by Trump's incoming communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, who said combating leaks was going to be one of his main priorities in his new job.
