Mere Chump change for the honor of being green and a faithful follower of Brother Elon and the church of electricity.

The new 'every man' Model 3 Tesla revealed this week for $35,000 may just be technicality, with even the most basic options pushing the price past $40,000.

The $35,000 price-tag, as car-consumer website Jalponik.com points out, is for the most bare-bones version of the car.

Any options, including a different color, will bump you well over the initially asking price.

And that's just the beginning, as Bloomberg's Dana Hull later pointed out in a tweet: 'So if you want a Model 3 in a color besides black with longer range battery, options and autopilot you are looking at $58K.'
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Friday the Model 3 had over half a million advance reservations as he handed over the first 30 to employee buyers.

Outside Tesla's Fremont, California factory, Musk showed off the $35,000 base vehicle with a range of 220 miles on a charge that marks a departure from the company's earlier luxury electric cars.

Musk noted that the 'standard' Model 3 version would only be made available next fall, with the pricier 'long range' model coming off the assembly line at an earlier date.

'The whole point of Tesla was to build a great affordable electric car,' Musk said at gathering for the rollout of the first Model 3 cars.

'That's what this day means. I'm confident it'll be the best car in its class, gasoline or not, hands down.'

Hours before the event, Musk acknowledged it would be 'quite a challenge' to build the car during the early days of production.

'We're going to go through at least six months of manufacturing hell,' Musk said.

The over half a million reservations are up from about 373,000 disclosed in April 2016.
