No light in sight: North Carolina barrier islands could be without power for weeksUSA Today, Jul 29, 2017
A power outage on two remote barrier islands in North Carolina is expected to linger anywhere from a few days to a few weeks as crews work feverishly to repair a severed underground transmission line.
About 9,000 homes on Hatteras and Ocracoke are in the dark after a construction crew building a new bridge accidentally cut the line Thursday, North Carolina Electric Cooperatives spokeswoman Kristie Aldridge said.
Officials ordered thousands of tourists to evacuate the popular summer destination of Ocracoke, and only travelers with documented proof of residency will be allowed back onto the island, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said.
Crews from PCL Construction — the company that caused the blackout — and Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative were assessing the damage Friday, Aldridge said. A timeline for power restoration has yet to be released.
“It’s hard to say right now when full restoration may be because it depends upon the extent of the damage and the location of repair materials, but residents and visitors are encouraged to prepare for an extended outage,” Aldridge said.
