The Interstate Highway system was built to easily facilitate moving troops and tanks in the case of invasion.  It was based on what Hitler had done with the Autobahn in Germany.

I thought it was built to give DC the power to coerce states by threatening to withhold highway money.
My avatar shows the national debt in stacks of $100 bills.  If you look very closely under the crane you can see the Statue of Liberty.

It also added massive economic benefits.  Travel times are greatly reduced enabling people to be much more mobile.

Kinda weird how something so beneficial to our country is seen as a bad thing.

Well, the majority of Republicans also oppose free trade and higher education now.

Says much, that does.

We don't so much need infrastructure built as maintained. We already have roads, bridges, water systems and the like, but they're in pretty bad shape and need repair. As always, the question is how to pay for it. Considering the deficit, the debt and half the population on welfare of some sort, something's gotta give.

That's what eventually happened.

There's nothing sexy to the constituents about maintenance.  All most people see there is construction on highways that already exist, it's only seen as a benefit to highway workers and contractors.

There are no votes in that kind of construction.  It's not like bike paths and forest campgrounds.
For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death — if you’re unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. Sloe Joe Biteme 12/16

Same reason the IOC awards the Olympics to countries that already don't have the facilities built.   Any Major US City could host the Olympics today without having to build that many new facilities.

What doesn't help is that the taxpayers can see clearly that the contractors are happily milking us dry.

M50 between Napoleon and Vandercook has been "under construction" since May and the crew doesn't work Mondays and Fridays. Now they've had South Street closed for the past week and I'm driving an extra 10 miles to and from work every day as they use that exit to park equipment 4 days per week.
