The Senate GOP bid to kill Obamacare — itself left for dead as of Monday morning — saw a flicker of life late in the day after a furious pressure campaign by President Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell heading into a critical Tuesday vote.

McConnell spent the day cajoling his members and meeting with Vice President Mike Pence to plot strategy. The majority leader was still short of the votes to even open debate, and Republicans still don't know what they'd be voting to allow debate on if they agree to go along with McConnell on the procedural vote.

But the Senate leader isn't being counted out. If he manages to round up the 50 votes, it would be a huge political victory. The absence of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and undecided positions of about a half-dozen senators have left McConnell with a tiny margin for error, and no one's quite sure what his end game is.
