Sen. Mike Lee: Trump Is a Conservative

Strict conservative and tea party die-hard Sen. Mike Lee told Politico of his belief that President Donald Trump is a conservative — insofar as he was elected under the Republican brand.

"At any given time, when there is a Republican president, typically we regard that person as the leader of the Republican Party. I would say that is the case today," Lee told Politico.

That headline is a bit of a stretch given the actual comments. He does say he's unequivocally a Republican (simply because he was elected on that party line) and SAYS he is conservative, but whether he actually IS one depends on his actual deeds. I would hope we all agree that is the case.

Maybe if he calls people names for being critical of the SPLC, we will know they are true conservatives.

Trump does believe in one conservative principle near and dear to Lee — breaking up the power in D.C. and giving it back to the people.

"He promised in his inaugural speech in January … to be something that will bring about a shift of power from Washington, D.C. back to the American people," Lee told Politico. "To the extent he adheres to those principles, which are, by their nature, conservative, then I think that will bode very well for the future of the conservative movement."

A lot of people, some deliberately, continue to equate Republican with conservative.  Being Republican does not mean you are conservative.  We have ample proof of that in most of the members of both houses of congress.  That's why the Senate can't pass an Obamacare repeal.

But Lee didn't say Trump is a conservative.  He said he made a promise that was conservative in nature.  Big difference.

Instead of making good on it, though, he's just introducing his own brand of corruption.
