It has been proven to be the opposite.
When I grew up, single wage earner households were the norm, and most mothers were home with the kids--not all, but most. Those who were not were generally professionals, or had a husband either recovering from an injury or otherwise unable to be employed.
As the trend grew to that second income being commonplace, our economy went through an inflationary cycle, most notably the Carter years, when fuel prices had quintupled, auto prices (new, 'entry level car) more than tripled, and interest rates were so high that many states had to change their usury laws for banks to be able to borrow at prime rate.
Now the (house and land) I grew up in ($20K in the mid 50s) is worth easily 25 times that in modern dollars, a new basic car (such as they are) is 12K instead of 2K, gasoline is 11X what it was back when, and while interest rates are low, the principle involved is still insanely high.
In other words, for many on the lower end of the income spectrum, the increase in wages brought little increase in buying power: inflation ate the difference, and now two-income households are more a matter of necessity for most youngsters than one of choice.
