Ford to export Focus car from China to U.S. in 2019: executive

Ford Motor Co (F.N) will export the next-generation Focus compact car from China to North America in 2019, rather than from Mexico as earlier planned, the company said on Tuesday.

The current Focus will be phased out of production in Wayne, Michigan in mid-2018, according to Joe Hinrichs, president of global operations. The Wayne plant will begin building a new Ranger compact truck in late 2018.

No U.S. jobs will be affected, Ford said, adding that it employs more U.S. hourly workers and builds more vehicles in the United States than any other automaker.
 
The redesigned Focus for North America will be built at a joint-venture plant in Chongqing, China, Hinrichs said. Earlier this year, Ford canceled plans for a new $1.8-billion small-car plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and said it would build the new Focus instead at an existing plant in Hermosillo.

Ford to move production of its Focus from the U.S. to China

 - Ford Motor Co. will export vehicles from China to the U.S. for the first time starting in 2019.

Ford said Tuesday it plans to move production of its Ford Focus small car from the U.S. to China, where it already makes the Focus for Chinese buyers.

Sales of small cars have dropped sharply in the U.S. and companies are seeking to cut costs making them. Ford's president of global operations Joe Hinrichs said the move to China will save the company $1 billion, including $500 million for canceling plans to build the Focus in Mexico.

I've been to the plant in Hermosillo.  The quality put out by the workers there is far superior to what will come from China.  Ford would have been better off sticking with Mexico.

Also would have been fewer Mexicans headed north as more jobs in Mexico keeps them there.

Funny story about that. Several years ago, Shreveport Louisiana was offered to have the Land Rover plant move there to the old GM Hummer facility. They turned down Land Rover's offer and held it on the promise for the start-up of a new 'green' vehicle called the Elio.  Going on about 7 years later, Elio still hasn't started production, continues to break promises while begging for money, and is on the verge of bankruptcy.

Many suspect some in Shreveport's city council had their pockets lined by Elio.
