Left-Right is not the political spectrum but an arc of collectivist tyranny. Individual freedom is nowhere to be found in that arc.
Well I agree in a way.
Starting on the Left (in keeping with tradition), We have the Communists, the Socialists (including the misplaced National Socialists), the Democrats (although they drift back all the way to the Communists), The Republicans (GOPe, who just want smaller,
more efficient, big government), The Republicans who want a Republic (with limits), The libertarians (some of whom have become awfully polluted with Socialist ideas), Constitutionalists, and a scattering of others running up to Anarchists (who show a lot of tendencies the Communists have).
In theory, at least, that roughly defines the political expression of a spectrum from Totalitarianism to no government at all. In practice, Constitutionalist principles perhaps best balance the Liberty of the individual with the need for some controlling authority in a society, but fall far short of individual sovereignty. YMMV
There are a lot of different ways of defining what form of government falls where, and we all acknowledge that for any nation to function (any political entity at any level, for that matter) there must be some overweening set of principles which define what is considered an acceptable philosophy and an acceptable level and scope of authority of any government. Those who wrote our Constitution did a pretty fair job of balancing those needs at the time, and with minor tweaking, the same basic structure and philosophy would hold up fine today--IF we would just use that with clear heads, adhere to it in the actions of our government, and have those actions ruled upon by jurists who were not pushing a political agenda or beholden to some contrary philosophy.
