7 House Republicans send letter to Trump urging Cuba remain open

By Serena Marshall

A group of pro-Cuba engagement House Republicans have sent a letter to President Donald Trump asking for Cuba to remain open as a "matter of U.S. national security" and adding they are "deeply concerned" by reports the administration is leaning toward reversing the Cuba policy.

The National Security Council is meeting today to finalize their policy and recommendations for the Principals Committee and then provide those recommendations to the president on Cuba, according to multiple sources briefed on the matter.

In the letter, the seven Republicans write, "Reversing course would incentivize Cuba to once again become dependent on countries like Russia and China. Allowing this to happen could have disastrous results for the security of the United States."

The representatives also argue that reversing the re-normalization of U.S. relations with Cuba would "threaten" the efforts to combat human trafficking, illicit drug trade, cybercrime and fraud identification.

The Republican congressmen that signed the letter include Reps. Tom Emmer of Minnesota, Rick Crawford of Arkansas, Ted Poe of Texas, Darin LaHood of Illinois, Roger Marshall of Kansas, James Comer of Kentucky and Jack Bergman of Michigan.

Wasn't our isolation of Cuba so many decades ago a matter of a law passed by Congress?  I don't recall the details.

Trump expected to announce Cuba policy rollbacks next Friday

By Alicia Cohn - 06/09/17 08:07 PM EDT

President Trump is expected to announce changes to U.S. policy toward Cuba next Friday in Miami, according to reports.

The administration has been evaluating Cuba policy for several months. Trump has criticized former President Obama’s decision to relax trade restrictions and re-establish diplomatic relations with Cuba.

“If Cuba is unwilling to make a better deal for the Cuban people, the Cuban/American people and the U.S. as a whole, I will terminate deal,” Trump pledged on Twitter last November.

Critics of Obama’s decision have said removing the embargo supports Cuban President Raúl Castro’s regime.

The specifics of Trump’s plan have not been announced. However, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) reportedly advised the administration, and both are pro-embargo.

Is he consistent about anything?

In 2015 he wanted to open trade with Cuba and it appears he may have violated the embargo himself.
