Tattoos: Are They Safe?

What you need to know about the health risks of tattoos, finding a safe tattoo parlor, and tattoo removal.
By Liesa Goins

Kate Beschen spent years contemplating a tattoo. So when the 37-year-old Philadelphia-based doula finally went for her ink last year, she thought she had covered all the bases. "I had my son and daughter drawn as superheroes on my upper arm," Beschen says. "I decided this was an image I'd be proud to have for the rest of my life."

But there was one angle Beschen didn't anticipate: her daughter's reaction. "My 15-year-old is making comments about wanting a tattoo," she says. "Now I'm not so sure how I feel about the process -- I want her to be safe, and I don't want her to regret it."

Not safe if you go swimming in the ocean/river after getting one (6-5-17-Dallas):

I'm waiting to see when the white ink tattoos become more readily-available.

They specifically tell you not to do this when you get one along with a laundry list of other things. This moron killed himself by being stupid.

You are more likely to die in a car accident than you are from getting a tattoo.

I will never have a tattoo. No desire.
I have never dated a women with a tattoo.

I am a one man, personal, no tattoo zone.

Part of that attitude is vanity. My body is so beautiful and perfect, I do not have any urge to wreck it with permanent graffiti.

You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

Light colors are the most difficult to remove, if that decision is made later in life.  White would be pretty much impossible.  I seem to remember a story about white tattoos...they're out there.

I don't think they are attractive on people. But that's just me.

Besides, when you get to a certain age, your skin isn't taut anymore and it can resemble a Mad fold in back cover  :silly:

My religion also forbades tattoos. Maybe that's why I'm not fond of them. But if you are over 18 you can have one. It's your body. Most people I know in their 20s and. 30s have one.

99.7% of people who get tattoos, find fault with them within six weeks.
89.5% of these, wish they had not done it.
24.6% will either try to remove them, or cut their skin off. It does happen.
Within a two year period, most of these will be looking for either removal, or cover-up.

Yeah sure. Yes indeed! That's what I want to pay hundreds of dollars to do.

Had 4, all small and in not readily visible areas. Had 3 removed. My serial number/blood type is still tatooed in my right armpit.

I have wondered whether the increased rate of autism has anything to do with the increase in people who have tattoos.  Just a thought in passing, of course I have no proof one way or the other.
