Orlando Shooting Leaves Multiple People Dead
« Reply #1 on: June 05, 2017, 02:15:18 pm »
A shooting in Orlando's industrial area left multiple people dead Monday morning, officials said.

Officers gathered in a parking lot outside a warehouse off Forsyth Road in Orange County, near Full Sail University, shortly before 9 a.m.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said it responded to a shooting in the area and that the scene has been "stabilized." They confirmed there were "multiple fatalities," adding that they are investigating a "tragic incident."

FBI is on the scene assisting local police on the investigation, a law enforcement official told Fox News.

The shooting comes a week before the one-year anniversary of the Pulse nightclub massacre, also in Orlando, where 49 people were fatally shot by Omar Mateen, an Islamic extremist.

Sounds a bit like the disgruntled employee type of situation but we will see. Multiple fatalities could mean 3, 4, 5.

The Associated Press talked with Shelley Adams, whose sister, Sheila McIntrye, works for the company and was in the bathroom when shots rang out.

McIntyre is safe with police now but she called her sister during the shooting, and she was very upset.

She kept repeating "My boss is dead. My boss is dead."

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings is expected to give a briefing. Officials said there were multiple fatalities and that situation is contained.

No more than an hour into it and they've already ruled out any terrorist connection.  They say a disgruntled employee.

If unhappy employees are "disgruntled", are happy employees "gruntled"?

"The verb disgruntle, which has been around since 1682, means "to make ill-humored or discontented." The prefix dis- often means "to do the opposite of," so people might naturally assume that if there is a disgruntle, there must have first been a gruntle with exactly the opposite meaning. But dis- doesn't always work that way; in some rare cases it functions instead as an intensifier. Disgruntle developed from this intensifying sense of dis- plus gruntle, an old word (now used only in British dialect) meaning "to grumble." In the 1920s, a writer humorously used gruntle to mean "to make happy"—in other words, as an antonym of disgruntle. The use caught on. At first gruntle was used only in humorous ways, but people eventually began to use it seriously as well."

Thank you for that explanation!  And I thought I was making a "somewhat" original joke.

As is so happens I too have wondered in the past whether "gruntle" wasn't an actual word that had maybe fallen out of favor over the years.  There are a number of other words with the "dis" or "in" or "un" in front of them that sound like they should be actual words but maybe aren't. And for that matter, why do the words "flammable" and "inflammable" mean the same thing? Shouldn't "inflammable" mean something that is not able to be ignited?  English is a weird language.

It happens.

Years ago a coworker was ranting on about how he was going to adjust the attitudes of management. Running his mouth was fine till he started showing people the gun he was going to adjust those attitudes with in his toolbox. Before long the GM and 2 state troopers showed up and escorted the guy off the property.

A few days later the guy was arrested in the parking lot waving the gun around yelling that he was going to kill every "Suit" in the building.

In my forty plus working years I worked at a number of different businesses and concerns. Virtually every one had at least one employee who other employees suspected of being able to go off.  He was usually the most disagreeable worker and many times the worst worker.

Yeah. This guy spent more time complaining and hassling the bosses than working.

Spouses can be a major problem as well. My ex wife worked in a place where an angry ex showed up and killed the boss, his ex wife, then went and killed her parents before killing himself.

Where I work now, security escorts the doctors to their cars every day. Security told me that they get a lot of threats from people upset that the docs can't cure everything and there are a lot of threats based on the fact that the docs are probably 95% Indian or Pakistani.

I wonder if there are any statistics as to how many of these "workplace violence" incidents are terrorism and how many are done by people with mental health issues.

These incidents make me all the more in favor of stopping illegal immigration and taking in "refugees."  We have our own homegrown crazies.  We don't need to import more.

The man was armed with a hand gun and a knife. He killed five people, before turning the gun on himself.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office Twitter account, they are working a shooting scene with "multiple fatalities."

Information is scarce at this time, however the Sheriff's Office has tweeted that they will be holding a press conference once all the information they have is in order.

Really is almost no information on it. Sheriff's keeping a tight lid.

In Mesa, AZ, near me, a fellow was mad at his ex so he broke into her office at night and poisoned the water cooler with Cyanide.  Killed a number of people, none of whom was his target.  He was perfectly happy to kill off her whole office just to get her, which he failed to do.

The place where my wife worked was in Allen MI. so you can imagine that 5 deaths is a very high toll in a town that small. My father in law was a 1st responder who lived in Allen so he knew all 4 victims and the killer. To make matters worse, later that night a house fire up the road in Litchfield killed 7 people and my father in law had to respond to that call as well. He went on a drinking binge for a while and we just stayed out of his way to let him work it all out for himself.

Been through Allen lots of times. If you blink you'll miss it.

Stephen King should write about that area.

In Reading 20 or so years back two whole families were wiped out by 2 different explosions at the same fireworks factory just a year apart.
