Trump’s War Budget Has $500M for Foreign Countries’ Bases

President Donald Trump plans to spend half a billion dollars on improvements and modifications to foreign countries' air bases, according to Defense Department budget documents released this week – an unusual outlay for a commander in chief who has based his foreign policy around making allies and partners pay more of their fair share.

The budget the Defense Department submitted to Congress includes $478 million for Air Force "military construction," $207 million of which will be dispersed among foreign facilities in the Middle East, including bases in Turkey and Jordan that the U.S. uses for operations against the Islamic State group. Another $271 million is earmarked for a series of air bases and airports in NATO countries, some of which are positioned along the Russian border.
