Lockheed Martin and its Sikorsky Innovations research unit are working to implement the tablet control system in the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, giving it autonomous capabilities and enhanced safety mechanisms, according a presentation by Chris Van Buiten, Vice President of Sikorsky Innovations, at a demonstration last week.
According to Buiten, autonomy is reinventing the way helicopters are flown, starting with the cockpit. The new optionally-piloted Black Hawk will be operated with “a simple tablet on the pilot’s knee,” said Buiten.
