President Donald Trump has decided not to immediately move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, a senior White House official said, violating a campaign promise but avoiding a provocation that could drive Palestinians away from peace talks.

The official said the administration considers its discussions with both the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority to be promising, with the Palestinians in particular agreeing to talk without preconditions. The official asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Trump said in a speech to the American Israeli Political Action Committee conference in March 2016 that he would move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, calling it “the eternal capital of the Jewish people.” The city is claimed as a capital by both Jews and Palestinians, however, and relocating the U.S. embassy -- essentially declaring Jerusalem to be Israeli territory -- would raise tensions.

Haley Echoes Trump Desire to Move US Embassy to Jerusalem

In an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network news channel (CBN), Haley's position echoes that of President Donald Trump's campaign vision for an embassy move to Israel's capital.

Earlier this month, Vice President Mike Pence said the Trump administration was continuing to give "serious consideration" to such a move.

"Obviously, I believe that the capital should be Jerusalem, and the embassy should be moved to Jerusalem, because if you look at all their government is in Jerusalem," Haley told CBN's chief political correspondent, David Brody on his show, "The Brody File."

Major policy shift: Trump administration declares Jerusalem part of Israel

Major, and most welcome. Jerusalem belongs to Israel by the record of history, international law, and the right of conquest that is recognized for every other state in the world, but not for Israel. This is an extremely encouraging development; we can only hope there will be more to come.
