The case of an Iraqi soldier, who claimed that one of his kidneys were stolen during treatment in a hospital in the capital Baghdad almost three years ago, sparked uproar and angered the country’s defense minister.

“The encroachment against this heroic soldier was as if they [culprits] put two of their fingers in the eyes of the minister,” in reference to himself, Iraqi Defense Minister Urfan Al-Hayali said during a press conference and meeting with the soldier Assi Shakeer on Monday.

Hayali ordered his ministry to begin a probe and requested Iraq’s ministry of health to open another investigation. The defense ministry also ordered that the government to pay all the expenses for Shakeer’s treatment.
