White House movie theater opens to visitors for first timeThe Hill, May 12, 2017, Max Greenwood
The White House is opening up its East Wing movie theater to visitors for the first time in history.
"The White House belongs to the people of this country," first lady Melania Trump said in a statement. "I believe everyone who takes the time to visit the White House should have as much access to its rich history and wonderful traditions as possible."
"It is my hope that our visitors truly enjoy the newest piece of the tour."
The theater was built in 1942 under President Franklin Roosevelt, and was renovated during the Reagan administration between 1982 and 1983. The theater was revamped once again during George W. Bush's administration.
The space is sometimes used by the president to rehearse major speeches, like the State of the Union address, but is more frequently used as a functioning theater for the first family.
