Marine fired for ‘bad conduct’ after refusing to remove a Bible verse from over her desk

JACKSONVILLE, North Carolina, May 9, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) — A Marine court-martialed in 2014 says she was denied her religious liberty when the placement of a Bible verse on her desk was used against her.

In May 2013, Lance Cpl. Monifa Sterling put Isaiah 54:17 (“No weapon formed against you shall prosper”) on her desk at Camp Lejune, North Carolina. Her superior cursed at her and told her to take it down. When she didn’t, the superior took it and threw it away.

Sterling was taken to military court and convicted in 2014 for refusing to obey orders. The miliary also contended that Sterling once failed to wear the "appropriate" uniform, a particular "uniform of the day" that Sterling says interferred with her medical back brace. She was also charged with not helping distribute vehicle passes.

Tough. Orders are orders, and failing to follow orders has a clearly defined punishment. No ifs, no ands, and no buts.

Failing to be in appropriate uniform without authorized reason also has clearly laid out punishments and sanctions. Again, no ifs, no ands, and no buts.

Lifesitenews is known to not be the most newsworthy source; but a story to watch none the less.

@EC

Now, we have a different presidency, the story to me, reflects the severe veering to the left under the Obama administration. Personally, I think things might be different if this happened again.  Another reason it was good to see the Democrats lose, was this extreme secularism that seemed to be occurring.  What do they call it? Secular Humanism.

Not going to deny that - assuming the story is accurate, which can be problematic for lifesitenews - the order to remove the quote was not one that should have been given. A suggestion is more appropriate for that sort of issue. Were the officer in question in my chain of command, they'd be looked at very hard indeed for it during the court martial proceedings.

However, it was given, and, being given by someone with the right to issue orders to the Lance and not an illegal order in itself, should then have been obeyed at once. One of the sad truths, rarely acknowledged, is that the people who do the most to defend inalienable rights do so by voluntarily giving up many of them for the duration.

Just guessing, based on what Obama did to the military, that a quote from the koran would have been accepted, or at the very least, would not have resulted in a Bad Conduct.

Lance Cpl. Monifa Sterling, by refusing what should have been considered a "lawful" order, placed herself in this situation.

If she had instead complied and then sought redress through her chain of command, things might have turned out much differently.
Throwing our allegiances to political parties in the long run gave away our liberty.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
As long as they do this for all religions, and atheists, then so be it. All or none, take your pick.
