Atheist Group Sues Trump Over Religious Freedom Executive Order

By Todd Richmond Published on May 6, 2017

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin-based atheist group has filed a lawsuit asking a federal judge to strike down President Donald Trump’s order easing enforcement of an IRS rule limiting religious organizations’ political activity.

A 1954 federal law prohibits tax-exempt charitable organizations such as churches from participating in political campaigns. Violators could lose their tax-exempt status, but the law — known as the Johnson Amendment — has rarely been enforced.

ACLU Backs Off Threat to Sue Over Religious Liberty Order

By Kevin Daley Published on May 5, 2017

The ACLU will not file a legal challenge to President Donald Trump’s executive order on religious liberty despite an aggressive statement promising litigation early Thursday afternoon.

The civil rights group issued a declaration promising a lawsuit shortly after the order was signed in a Rose Garden ceremony at the White House. They accused the administration of empowering its clerical allies on the religious right.
