This is a book you might want to read (if you haven't yet) if you want to get at some of the truths about the Rolling Stones
that Messrs. Jagger, Richard, and Andrew Loog Oldham don't always like to remember:

"The question of who is right is a small one, indeed, beside the question of what is right."---Albert Jay Nock.

Fake news---news you don't like or don't want to hear.

Bumped into this one again tonight . . . a classic written by Sy Oliver not long after he was hired away
from the Jimmie Lunceford organisation to arrange for this band:

Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra, "Opus One"

To all newcomers, any music is welcome; at this point, some of us get the ball rolling by seeing whose birthday it is today and post one of their songs. Post your music and most of us are hospitable and most of us have the welcome mat out and aren't engaged in musical snobbery.

A couple songs I had on the headphones this morning; no rhyme or reason, just a couple of 70s one-hit wonders.

Just 'cause I had this one in my head this morning (it's been getting a lot of airplay on the radio station that I listen to...) it's sort of a throwback country song...

Obvious mega-hits here, he must have been a co-writer:

Collaborated with Barrett Strong on such hits as, 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine', ‘Ain't Too Proud to Beg’, ‘(I Know) I'm Losing You’, ‘Cloud Nine’, ‘War’, ‘Papa Was a Rolling Stone’ and ‘Car Wash’. Those are both very good. The Airport Love Theme reminds me a bit of Ferrante and Teicher's take on the Midnight Cowboy theme.

He was indeed the co-writer, with Barrett Strong. Gladys Knight, to whom Whitfield first gave that song,
had this to say about working with it, which tells you something about how strong it was even in its
embryonic stage and how smart Whitfield was---when he picked the right group for a song, he let
them have their heads with it:

Quote
When we got that song, it was nowhere near the song it ended up being. Norman approached
us with it and said, "I got a great song that I think will work for you guys. See what you think about it,
take it home." We lived with that song at home, on the road, we ate, slept, everything with it for two
months. We brought it back for Norman one day the way we had done it . . . He went into the studio
that minute, put Smokey [Robinson] out so we could go upstairs and record! We didn't have anything
to do with the writing, but the structure is so important in production. We tore it apart, we did all
the little things.

Gladys Knight & the Pips, "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"

For me, though, these, too, are Whitfield's masterpieces:

The Temptations, "Smiling Faces Sometimes"

The Temptations, "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone"

Happy birthday and RIP, Norman Whitfield.

Another Motown birthday boy: Henry Cosby, songwriter, who helped (with Sylvia Moy) a kid named
Stevie Wonder flesh out his first songwriting germ . . .

Stevie Wonder, "Uptight (Everything's Alright)"

Cosby was also a Funk Brother, playing saxophone.

Stevie Wonder, Richie Valens, Mary Wells, members of the Marshall Tucker band and Mott the Hoople are among others born today. Satisfaction was recorded, the Let It Be Beatles movie was released.

Willie Lewis' band had a concert in Switzerland in 1941, the US had not entered the war yet.

Tom,that looks like a 1933 Willys roadster. May be a 34,though.

BTW,you might want to change the title date to 13 May,or some of the less stable people here might think they are living in the future.

BTDT

Before the gig, the band leader chats up the singer.

"Tonight, when we do Night and Day," he tells her, "I want you to sing the second verse first, and then break into the bridge one bar early. Transpose the bridge up a minor third, but then back down again for the last three bars of it. Then add a 5/4 bar going back into the first chorus, singing on only off-beats. During the sax solo, hit the bridge a bar-and-a-half early, interrupting the solo, finish the first verse, go to the coda a bar late, and then keep singing for 3 beats after the rest of us have ended."

Her eyes widen and she says, "That's way too hard, I can't do all that."

He says, "Oh don't sell yourself short. You did it last night."
