Solar Company Gets $25 Million In Taxpayer Subsidies, Goes Bankrupt

Posted By Andrew Follett On 8:51 PM 04/20/2017

Solar company Suniva Inc. filed for bankruptcy Wednesday after receiving millions in government subsidies to manufacture solar panels.

Suniva blamed its bankruptcy on competition from cheap Chinese-made solar panels, but the company received about $20 million in support from federal and state taxpayers, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

But Suniva got help from taxpayers. The company received $8.8 million from the federal government between 2010 and 2016 on top of up to $11 million in state incentives so they could manufacture more solar cells, the Journal-Constitution reported.

The company also received a $5.7 million federal tax credit in 2010 as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Suniva is considering filing a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission to protest Chinese subsidies for solar panel producers...

Seriously?   A company that received $25 million in government subsidies is going to protest Chinese companies that receive government subsidies?
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

To me it's another example that proves government has no business being waist deep in business.  To be fair, the playing field is not equal as Chinese companies go by different sets of rules which I'm assuming is their major complaint.  The rules of the game is one area where the government can work to level the playing field.  Just stay away from subsidies which always have "unintended consequences", and since those consequences happen 100% of the time it proves they are not unintended at all.

But that's OK, Donald Trump is on it and he'll go after those Chinese trade cheaters!

(Until he and the Chinese have a friendly heart-to-heart and he realizes they're not really bad guys after all...)
