CNN: US military defends dropping 'mother of all bombs' on ISIS

Headline out of CNN.   Why would the Military have to "defend" anything such as this?

"It was the right time to use it tactically against the right target on the battlefield."

Being this was at night that will probably be the only video of the explosion. With ISIS using tunnels in that hillside this is completly justified. If we or friendly Afghans are sending troops in to take that provence, this just saved many many lives.

Oh how the 1st Marines could have used one of these on Pelelui.

I don't have a problem but I do question about the cost effectiveness.

For that kind of boom I would like to see triple digit casualties.

There is a better way to deal with terrorists.

Get yourself an airplane and load it up with pallets full of cold hard cash.  It worked so well for Obama we ought to give it a try again.

My only problem with them using a MOAB was the fact it only killed 36 Daesh fighters if what I read this morning was accurate.

You need to get more than that if you're gonna use a bomb this big.

I'd suggest Mecca where the concentration is pretty high.

That's my attitude about it as well. Probably more effective for psy ops.

Just dump one in open desert surrounded by villages so they can watch.

Early on in Iraq and Afghanistan the best Psy Op tool we had believe it or not was the B-52.

They dropped their payload from such a high altitude the bad guys didn't know what was coming until it was too late.  The last sound they heard was the whistling of the bombs just before impact.  They never heard the planes that dropped them LOL!

Probably collapsed tunnels, destroyed equipment, infrastructure, etc. plus dispatching the isis pukes...no telling who the isis pukes are, but hopefully they got a lot of "top" level pukes in the blast.

This isn't Vietnam where body count determines success...have to destroy their ability to hide and fight as well.

Those tunnels must really go down far and have been a priority because ISIS members killed is being reported at 38. I saw one report that 800 were there on the ground. There may be new developments yet, I don't see how we know these details.

What an odd way of phrasing the question --  Was dropping that particular bomb "necessary?"  I'd say "convenient", "useful", "preferred" are more than sufficient justifications.

A common hazard of modern reporting about military issues is that there are virtually no American reporters left who have ever served in the US military.

When reporters issued dispatches from the front lines in WWII, Korea and even Vietnam, many if not most of them had served themselves, and certainly had friends and family members who had.
 
Today, it is rare to find any journalist who has served in any branch of our military, and increasingly rare to find a reporter who has a single friend or family member who has.

Elitist self-selection continues apace.
