Cook County judge shot dead, woman wounded outside South Side home

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-man-shot-dead-woman-wounded-in-roseland-neighborhood-20170410-story.html

A Cook County judge was killed and a woman was wounded in a shooting outside the judge's South Side home Monday morning, a police source said.

Associate Judge Raymond Myles, 66, and a 52-year-old woman were found outside the home in the 9400 block of South Forest Avenue around 4:50 a.m., police said.

Myles suffered several gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.  The woman was hit in the leg and was taken to Christ in serious condition.

The neighbor said he believes the judge and the woman were leaving the home to work out at a health club nearby.  They always got up early to work out, he said.  "The woman, she had a bottle of water with her."

The neighbor also thinks that cameras installed by the judge at his home caught the shooting.  There had a been push recently to get cameras installed through the neighborhood.  He remembered joking with Myles about how the cameras might catch neighbors doing something embarrassing.

Raymond Myles is an associate judge on the Cook Judicial Circuit Court in Illinois.[1] He was reappointed in 2011 and again in 2015. His current term will expire on June 30, 2019

Googling the judge's name resulted in this odd story:

Ruling awaits man accused of beating fellow motorist, who turned out to be judge

March 17, 2017

A Chicago man is awaiting trial on battery charges after authorities said he got into a minor traffic collision and then attacked the other motorist ā€” who happened to be a Cook County judge.

Deandre Hudson

Authorities said the judge was trying to park along East 86th Place on Chicago's South Side in the fall of 2015 when his car was struck by another vehicle. The two drivers got out of their cars, but when the judge pulled out a cellphone and began taking pictures of the damage, the other driver punched him in the face, causing serious injuries, according to court records.

The judge fell to the ground bleeding and the assailant fled, according to a Cook County state's attorney's spokeswoman.

The judge, Raymond Myles, was taken to Jackson Park Hospital, where he was treated for a fractured nose, facial bruising and a chipped tooth, injuries that later required reconstructive surgery, records show.

The beating occurred in September 2015, but 10 months went by before authorities arrested Deandre Hudson, 22, and charged him with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm to someone over the age of 60, according to court records.  ...

Hudson was free on bond, at last report.

Shooting of Cook County judge was a 'targeted robbery,' police say

CHICAGO (WLS) --  A 37-year-old man was charged Wednesday in connection with the shooting death of Cook County Judge Raymond Myles on Chicago's South Side, police said.

Joshua Smith was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and obstruction, police said during a Wednesday night press conference. He is scheduled to appear Thursday in Bond Court in Chicago.

The shooting resulted from a "targeted robbery" and police "don't believe that he worked alone," said CPD Chief of Detectives Melissa Staples. She said the they continue to interview multiple people and that the investigation is "very open, active and ongoing."

Myles and his 52-year-old girlfriend were shot early Monday morning outside the judge's home in the 9400-block of South Forest Avenue in the city's West Chesterfield neighborhood. The woman was shot in the leg.

The girlfriend was outside the house when she encountered the armed offender. The judge heard the commotion, came out and confronted the gunman. He was shot four times and killed.

The gun used in the shooting matches one used in a January armed robbery, but police said that incident is not related to the judge's shooting.

Police did not say whether Smith was the shooter.

Smith was convicted in 2003 of armed robbery and served six years in prison.

Smith was nabbed with the help of the many surveillance cameras in the neighborhood, police said, which helped them identify a license plate. ...
