I looked at that this morning. Assad was initially blamed in 2013 but it turned out not to be the case.

'Negative consequences': Russia warns US over possible military action in Syria

Russia warned the US that there could be "negative consequences" if Washington takes military action against Syria.

"All responsibility if military action occurs will be on the shoulders of those who initiated such a doubtful tragic enterprise," Russian Ambassador Vladimir Safronkov told reporters following a closed-door Security Council meeting on Syria.

Mr Safronkov said he had been "frank" during the meeting, telling the council: "We have to think about the negative consequences".

"Look at Iraq, look at Libya," he said, referring to Western interventions in those countries that unleashed years of chaos.

The US threatened Syria with military action as President Donald Trump warned "something should happen" following a suspected chemical attack that left at least 86 dead - including 27 children - and provoked global outrage

I think the story goes is that US planes actually observed the Syrians dropping barrel bombs with the sarin from planes, I'd have to dig up the story but read that somewhere.

Anyway, Assad, Iran's proxy and Iran killed US soldiers in Iraq, Assad allowed Jihadists to operate from Syria; Syria is a designated state sponsor of terrorism and has been on that list for over 20 years, maybe since '79, they have assassinated Christian heads in Lebanon, obviously weapons to Hezbollah and Hamas go through Syria and the list goes on. I'm for being cautious about war if I were to vote on it but I have little sympathy for Assad.

FWIW, I provisionally agree with him on it, too.  It definitely sets him apart from Obama, and that's probably good. 

As to what happens next... that's the "provisional" part.  If there's any sort of strategic thinking behind this then hopefully it won't be too bad; it's not going to be "good" regardless -- as VDH puts it, it may be the least worst choice.

If Trump can also start a diplomatic effort with the Russians to get rid of Assad, and also beat the jihadis, then it's a net plus.

But if it's just a gesture....

Let's see ... Syria was just accused of launching chemical weapons.  Syria denied the accusation and Putin is standing by Asaad.  I'd say this is more than a gesture ... Trump didn't even wait 48 hours ... its jumping the gun without concrete proof and without the consent of Congress!

Our main concern is how Russia reacts..not Syria...we can take out Assad/Syria in about 2 days or less
