What makes a car a classic? A unique cultural formula of factors, according to vehicle valuation specialists at market research group Black Book — and if they all come together the right way, you could be making big bucks selling vehicles that were once commonplace. There’s just one catch. Well, two. It would be better if you bought it in, say, 1971. And it really helps if the car in question is still in mint condition.

Some cars once sold for the manufacturer’s relatively affordable suggested retail prices have years later been marked up thousands, sometimes tens of thousands of percent. The 1971 Plymouth Barracuda, for example, was once purchased for an asking price of $4,296 and is now worth $2.5 million — a 58,000% increase in value over time.

Once purchased for just $7,500, the 1967 Shelby Cobra has increased 17,000% to $1.3 million. Other models are also raking in cash in auctions around the country, the list shows, including the Cadillac Eldorado, Chevy Corvette, Pontiac Bonneville, Ford Thunderbird, and Ford Mustang GT.

So, hold on to your Prius, and see what it’s worth in 40 years.

Anyone think an economy sedan is going to be worth spit in a could years, just look around at was the Pius's previous counterparts are doing......nothing. A nice 1974 Ford Maverick goes for about $2500.

BTW, that $3.5 mill Hemi Cuda the guy bases his story around is one of 11 Hemi Cuda convertables built and only two of them came with 4 speeds. That particular one is the only number matching one left. It is a unicorn just like James Coburn's Ferrari and Steve McQueen's Bullitt Mustang.

Now I'm really kicking myself for not shelling out the $3,000 for that XKE Jag back in 1980...

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I have a 32 Ford coupe that is worth a couple of bucks. It sold new for about 600. It has been modified a little, though. That's my all-original 38 Ford tudor "humpback" sedan in the background.

Looking good. I love those old Fords. You can't beat the sound of those old flat head V8's

I had an opportunity to buy a yellow '69 Roadster that just needed the leather redone 15 years ago for $5K. It was before the auctions drove the prices up. My reasoning for passing? I already had a Caddy conv the same colors. That bad decision makes me sick to my stomach today.

@Idaho_Cowboy

That one has a balanced and blueprinted 350 going in in it with Keith Black flattop pistons, gapless rings, gear drive,292-302 cam with .535 lift,Dart 2 heads, and dual quads. Should be plenty of HP for a 2000 lb car.

The engine in it now is a old 283 junker I used to build motor, radiator, and transmission mounts, and to build the headers.  The 6 carb intake is just sitting on it. I had it laying around,so I just set it on the engine for grins because most people under 30 have never even seen a 6 carb intake.

Here is the "real" engine for it. 350 Chevy with Keith Black 10 to 1 flat top pistons, gapless rings,Pete Jackson gear drive,292-302 cam with 5.35 lift,Dart 2  heads with roller rockers, and a dual quad intake. Should be plenty of HP for a 2000 lb car.

Here is my other coupe. It's a 1933 Plymouth and it's getting a 6 carb DeSoto hemi with a hot cam, push button 727,and 8-3/4 Mopar rear. Everything in it will be pre-1961,and be Mopar.

There was a '46 Hudson sitting in the field down at my grandparents I wanted to restore. My cousin insisted he was going to. Never did. Life passed by and my uncle had it crushed.

We were one-child short of the Brady Bunch. A 1957 Ford Station Wagon just like this was perfect for hauling us around. Ours was Black & White.
It was replaced in 1968, and sat in the back yard rusting away for years, becoming a place for me and my friends to play in, pretending we were driving.
