MOSCOW (AP) — Despite pressure from an ultra-conservative lawmaker, Russia's Culture Ministry has approved the release of Disney's Beauty and the Beast movie starring Emma Watson despite protests over a gay character.

The ministry told The Associated Press on Tuesday that it has granted a screening license to the film with a 16-plus age restriction.

The film's characters include manservant LeFou, who plays the sidekick to the story's villain Gaston and, according to director Bill Condon, "is confused about his sexuality." Condon has described a brief scene as a "gay moment."

In Alabama, a drive-in movie theater said it would not be showing the film for children as planned because of the scene.

The culture ministry's decision comes several days after Vitaly Milonov, a lawmaker known for his extreme-right views, petitioned the ministry to ban it. In a letter released by the RIA Novosti news agency on Saturday, Milonov protested that the film disseminates "overt and shameless propaganda of sin and sexual perversion under the guise of a fairy tale."

Milonov, who was elected to the State Duma last year, is a former local lawmaker in St. Petersburg who has built his political career on opposing LGBT rights.

I don't care about Effou. What I don't get is why a story about what the Soviets are doing has a throw away line about some unknown, unconfirmed Drive In in AL. You would almost think that this "Who gives a shit" story about the Soviets is more about shoehorning in this Drive In than anything else.

Franklin Graham calls for Disney boycott over gay 'Beauty and the Beast' character

Evangelical leader Franklin Graham is praising an Alabama theater for canceling its showing of the new "Beauty and the Beast" film due to the inclusion of a "gay moment."

In a message posted to Facebook on Saturday, the president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association commended the drive-in theater for its decision, saying, "I wish more businesses would have this kind of character to take a stand for what is right. God bless them. Let them know in the comments below that you support their decision."

Graham then posted a copy of the Henagar Drive-In Theatre's statement regarding the matter, in which the business owner expressed opposition to running the film.

"When companies continually force their views on us we need to take a stand. We all make choices and I am making mine," stated the business.

"For those that do not know Beauty and the Beast is 'premiering' their first homosexual character. The producer also says at the end of the movie 'there will be a surprise for same-sex couples.'"

As of Monday morning, Graham's Facebook post has received over 149,000 likes, about 12,000 loves, and more than 35,000 shares.

So "Who gives a s**t ?" Apparently, not only the Russians do, but lots of Americans in this country as well.

Whether the boycott will be effective remains to be seen ( I suspect it won't ).
