Democrats try new tactic to get Trump's tax returns
By Reid Wilson - 03/04/17 12:01 PM EST

State legislators across the country are debating new measures that would require candidates running for president to publicly disclose their tax returns to qualify for the ballot.

The measures are aimed at President Trump, who became the first White House candidate in recent times refuse to release his tax documents to the public.

Democrats, incensed by Trump’s false claims of being prevented from releasing the documents because of an IRS audit, see the legislation on the state level as a way to force the president’s hand when he seeks reelection in 2020.

Not a bad idea IMO.

Remember Trump said he was going through an audit and would release them after the audit was done.

So I'm in favor of this.

This is demonstrably unconstitutional.  The requirements for federal office (Senators, Congressmen, President and Vice President) are ESTABLISHED in the Constitution.  Any additional requirements by either the states or Congress is a clear violation of the separation of powers and an overreach.

If you want to add any requirements for the office, do so through a constitutional amendment.

Nothing unconstitutional about it at all.

Have you ever heard of the Fifth Amendment?

If there's something incriminating in it as the Democrats claim, they can't force him to release it. If there isn't, there's no point in releasing it.

A state can pass a law requiring candidates release their tax returns before their name goes on the ballot though. They have plenty of other restrictions on whose name can go on a ballot.
