First import of Russian steel arrives at new Paulsboro port
« on: March 04, 2017, 10:07:32 pm »

PAULSBORO -- Standing in the shadow of a large ship were dozens of men and women wearing hard hats and reflective safety vests. Some had dirt on their clothes, signifying the hard work they had put in.

Just feet in front of them sat a dozen officials, clad in suits and ties, or skirts and heels.

While these two groups of people couldn't appear anymore different, they all had one common factor -- smiles on their faces.

These are the people who brought the dream of a fully-functioning port in Paulsboro to fruition.

On Wednesday, Doric Warrior made its final leg of a long journey to Paulsboro from Russia. The ship, 230 meters long, carried the first shipment of steel to the Paulsboro Marine Terminal. Crews worked tirelessly to unload some of the steel before Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assemblyman John Burzichelli, the men who envisioned and backed the port since day one, would welcome guests to mark the occasion.

There are steel companies in America but very few of them are doing any real refining or smelting. Alro steel have several locations in my area but its all secondary operations stuff like cutting and forming. They still do smelting on Zug Island in Detroit.

There is no story here. The steel was ordered and paid for long before Trump made the American steel for the pipeline pledge. And steel is not just steel. There are many different grades of steel for different purposes. Even  Ruger Pistols American Made stickers on thier  boxes, buy their steel ingots from Italy who can meet the high standards Ruger demands for  manufacturing of their frames. I am told they take that steel and cut away anything that doesn't look like a gun.
Point being is there is some steels you pretty much have to procure from other countries. Not much different than grades of Marble for your countertops. It's not as simple as making a pledge to buy American and living up to that pledge and expect the best quality. I thought the pledge rather foolish myself. Red meat for his fans.

I serviced lease locomotives up the river in Morrisville, PA at the port facility at the former U.S. Steel Fairless Works.  Huge "Chernobyl" steel slabs were brought in, unloaded to railcars, sent to rolling mills out in western PA, turned into coils, then shipped back to be loaded onto ships to go back to international destinations.

To me, it seemed absurd that here this transload port operation was going on right on the very site of what was a mighty, relatively modern, domestic steel mill that employed hundreds of employees, supported hundreds of families... and here all that infrastructure had been completely torn down and turned into brownfields.

Much of that steel pipe is already purchased, waiting to be installed.  It would be crazy to force them to sell it and repurchase it again.

American manufacturing is a mess but not for the reasons many think it is. A lot of "imported" goods come from here originally and are sent elsewhere for processing. The melamine pet food scare of several years ago involved American grown wheat sent to china for processing (where it was contaminated) then sent to Canada and made into pet food. Nearly all of America's scrap metal is sold to China and we then turn around and buy it back.

One of the nice things that MI governor Rick Snyder negotiated into the deal for the new Detroit river bridge (Gordie Howe International Trade Crossing Bridge) is that a significant portion of the steel be locally produced. The bridge will be within a few hundred yards of Zug Island which is an ironworks so the steel is effectively produced onsite. The deal also includes 50% of the labor force to be Americans. Michigan is also a top limestone producer so Americans involved in making concrete will benefit there as well.

Look at the Mackinac bridge built in the heyday of American manufacturing. The longest single span suspension bridge in the world for 30 years. It was built in under 3 years with no winter construction due to the harsh climate and nearly every ounce of it was produced right here in the midwest.

Today you stand a better chance of landing a man in the moon inside of 3 years than you stand of building a bridge like that in 20 years.
